New stories this week: Older Trees Grow Faster, Take Up More Carbon – Trees’ growth accelerates with age, according to a new study, published in the journal Nature,  which suggests that the world’s oldest trees could play an important role in combating climate change. The revelation goes against the long-held assumption that trees lose their vigor with age.

and: Indigenous tribe gets respite from loggers in Brazil – Survival International dubbed the Awá “the most threatened tribe in the world,” because deforestation caused by illegal logging has rapidly overtaken their land. In March 2012, a Brazilian judge published an order demanding the eviction of loggers and ranchers from Awá land by March 31, 2013. Now, Brazil’s indigenous affairs department, known as FUNAI, has sent police and special agents to the territory to evict illegal squatters.  Image
