On the very last day of 2014, the Department of Energy released new energy efficiency standards for linear fluorescent bulbs, in a move that will save monster amounts of energy and money.

and … U.S. appeals court ruled that Federal officials acted properly when they curtailed water extraction from California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to protect fish and Orca species at the expense of farmers and other water users in central California.

A federal judge on Friday restored U.S. Endangered Species Act protections to gray wolves in the western Great lakes in a decision hailed by wildlife advocates for halting wolf hunting and trapping planned in such states as Minnesota and Wisconsin.   :))

Dietary guidelines released by the government every five years lay out recommendations for healthy eating. Next year’s version may look at what is healthy for the environment, too.  (Good luck on THAT ever happening!)

The Yuroks, CA’s largest tribe, is supplementing their income, not by selling their forests, but by selling carbon credits to some of the state’s biggest polluters. Six years after a catastrophic coal ash spill in Tennessee washed away homes and polluted rivers, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday the first federal regulations for the toxic wastes created by coal burned to produce electricity. Many believe it is nowhere near enough regulation, believing coal ash should be classified as “hazardous waste.”
